The “Daily 5” is in full practise in this classroom. This is a teaching style that consists of 5 activities that occur throughout the day or every few days. They are: Read-to-Self, Read-to-Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing.
The children will become amazing “athletes” in their reading through this structured learning. They will learn 3 ways to read a book independently: 1: read the words through decoding strategies and practice (this is the focus on phonics, which is connecting speech sounds (phonemes) to letters (or letter patterns, (i.e. graphemes).
2: read the pictures (predict unfamiliar words, use as hints for letter sounds and infer),
3: retell the story in their own words
Our class goal is to build our independent reading stamina up to 20 minutes (gr. 1) and 30 minutes towards the end of the year (for gr. 2) of "all by myself"reading time! This will happen by consistent phonics practice.
Word Work - In order for the children to develop strong reading skills, they require printing practice. By physically printing letters and connecting them to sounds that they represent, the reading brain is able to commit the words to their working memory. In class, students work with letters to create words and sentences through various activities.
Work on Writing - Both grade one and two will focus on three styles of writing. Procedural writing, personal narratives, and persuasive texts.
