Sent to be Good News:
Do you knit or crochet? Do you have some time to volunteer? Our grade 1 class has started a "Sent to be Good news" act of kindness by trying to collect or make warm mitts, hats, and scarves for the homeless in Ottawa.
Our project #helpthehomeless #knittingfortheneedy began from the children themselves. We had been learning about how little children can still make a difference and from our discussion came concerns for people who had no homes. Our discussions led to ideas about how they themselves could make a difference. If you could offer time to help us or donate knitted mitts/hats/mitts please send them in with your child or contact me through your child's agenda.
Library and Snuggle books are due Tuesday!
WEEKLY WORD WALL WORDS:
Each week your student learns 5 new words to recognize, read, and spell. In order to support your student learn these new words have them try to find them as you read each night in their snuggle books. IF your child is already recognizing and reading the words, play games spelling the words or using them in different sentences.
Monthly Popcorn Friday's are here! Did you remember to order yours? You should be able to order through the online payment link on Jams website!

RAZ KIDS and DREAMBOX are active!
Please note that I am beginning to assess your child's individual reading level and will adjust their level on Raz Kids as needed. I realize that many may have already surpassed the entry level that they are on now. Please encourage your child to access the Reading room for a variety of leveled readers in the meantime.

What does your student need?
1. Each child MUST:
- keep a pair of running shoes with non-marking soles at school for daily use. Please remember to send socks if your child wears sandals outside.
-please try to provide a personal set of ear/head phones (over the ears please-earbuds do not always stay in little ears). We often use Chromebook computers and iPad for activities. Having headphone allows students to focus on their individual tasks at hand. Please label the headphones.
-Extra clothes in ziplock large bag, labeled, in backpack.
2. I will be sending home an agenda with your child in a mailbag for protection. I appreciate your assistance in returning the agenda and mailbag daily. Although we will not always write in the agenda, the mailbag will contain newsletters and updates from the school. Please check it each evening. I communicate to you through the agenda. Should a written note be in the agenda please initial that day’s section - so I know you have seen the messages. I will initial any notes that you write in the agenda as well.
3. If possible, it would be greatly appreciated if students could bring in the following item(s) for the classroom:
*A box of Kleenex and/or a box of large Ziploc bags
4. St. James eco initiative is for students to bring “litterless” lunches. (What cannot be recycled or composted, will be returned in your child’s lunchbox.) It is a good idea to send a small plastic bag in their lunch bag, for your child to place garbage into.
We are off to an exciting year! I look forward to meeting with you!
Yours in education,
MATH HOMEWORK - Dreambox will be available for your student soon!
The math game/activities that go home monthly are yours to keep. If you see your child struggling in any part of the game/activity, please send me a note so that I can contact you to discuss a possible strategy to use when supporting your child's learning at home. The games/activities are designed to challenge and practice concepts we are working on.
A reminder that all math games/activities can stay at home with your child. These are designed for you to use again and again or create a similar activity to practice the skills.
Reading Program: Snuggle books will begin end of September.
Snuggle Books and LIBRARY books due each TUESDAY!
If you find the books that are going home too easy/uninteresting/not enough variety, please use Raz kids and READ, READ, READ! Remember to document every time your child reads in their Snuggle Book chart!
Raz-Kids and Dreambox are available as apps for ipads and tablets. Each child has their own passwords. Your child knows their picture passwords. I have posted the passwords in agendas. If there is any difficulty accessing these apps , please contact me. You can also access these programs on a laptop or desktop computer. You can use the links on my website as well.

Again, thank you for all that you do and for your continued support in your child's learning!
Please consider sending in water bottles daily if you do not usually. With the warmer weather, our class enjoys using the "outdoor classroom" as we do math, science, and gym activities. Having a portable water bottle will help eliminate frequent trips back inside the school for water. I also encourage students to drink throughout the day. A water bottle allows your child to stay in the classroom rather than accessing the water fountain continuously.
You are welcome to pack sunscreen in your child's backpack. Please instruct them on how to apply it properly.
