Grade 1 & 2 HomeworkThis year the homework program will consist of ... a focus on reading ONLY. Although I am not tracking homework progress, the expectation is that students read daily by listening to someone read and practising reading words through decoding strategies.
Below are a few suggestions for supporting your child's progress through practise at home. Should your child require more support in a particular area you will be contacted directly and the individual program will be developed. ReadingREAD READ READ each evening! Developing good reading skills is an integral part of your child’s learning. In the primary grades, we are trying to foster a love of reading and create “bookworms.” By participating in reading with your child at home, your child is more likely to practise reading skills and develop a love for it.
Students in grade one build their reading skills by applying correct sounds to the correct letter symbol, then stretching these sounds together. You can support your student by modeling sounds and blending the sounds together while reading together. You can access Raz-Kidz for "just right" readers using your child's password. Need more ideas for books? The app EPIC is also a great resource. You can create your own account. There is a cost for this resource. MathInvite your child to do many everyday math activities (cooking with you (measuring), estimate and prove timed activities (ex. how long it takes to brush teeth), build with blocks/lego/loose parts and explain how much of something they used, and playing card games).
